If there’s anything that 2020 has taught me, it’s that the world doesn’t wait around.
The planet isn’t going to stop spinning just for you.
I spent a lot of time at home last year, like a lot of us. A bit too much time at home if you ask me. To be honest, I have never been more lonely, even whilst (virtually) surrounded by loving friends and my family. More than anything though, these feelings have helped me to realise that it’s no good twiddling your thumbs and waiting for something exciting to happen.
I need to start living. I said to myself at the beginning of 2020: “Katherine, this is the year you are going to be happy.” Well, yeah, so that wasn’t exactly the case. But happiness is a PURSUIT. I realise that now. It is something that we are constantly working towards, constantly looking for in everything. You cannot achieve happiness if you are constantly TRYING to be happy.
To be honest, I was most happy last year when I wasn’t thinking about it. The summer was great. We had really sunny, warm weather here, and I spent most of my time outside. I thrive off of the sun, and working in the garden, lying on a blanket underneath the cherry tree, reading a book in the breeze, these simple things brought me so much joy. As did building this website. I started my own business, I created a blog, I published a book! All of these things that I have achieved last year that I forget about amongst the cloud of our current global situation. All of these things brought me so much happiness, and I could not be more grateful for all of the opportunities that last year provided me.
But now it’s time to take steps further. I learnt some valuable lessons last year when starting up my business. The most influential one also being the most heartbreaking, and that is this:
No one is going to care about your business as much as you.
Yeah, that sh*t hurts man. I remember coming back from a trip to the Forest of Dean (which had been allowed at the time) the week my ebook was published, and I came back to not a single sale. My sister, the darling that she is, purchased a copy immediately after finding this out. But I wasn’t really upset about the number of sales in the end (although I still happy dance at every single purchase), but more at the realisation that no one does care about my work as much as I do. And what an important lesson that was to learn.
No one is going to care about your business as much as you do.
But that doesn’t mean you should stop. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep going. Step out of your comfort zone. Pursue your dreams. No one else is going to care as much as you do but that doesn’t mean you should stop caring at all. Your dreams are your dreams. No one can take that away from you.
This year, I am pursuing my dreams in a louder fashion.
It’s time to wake up people! We have a world to run, a world to change. I have a vision for this business, this community, myself, in 2021 and onwards. My vision is this:
How many times last year did out attention drift away from the climate emergency that our planet is currently facing? I can’t keep count, can you? The world doesn’t wait around, we discussed that already. By now, it is almost too late to make a change. It is one minute past midnight and we are far behind.
My vision for this year is to motivate, raise awareness, get people out of their old habits and creating greener ones. We are not ruling over this Earth. Mother Nature has more power than we can even begin to fathom. Global warming didn’t stop whilst we were panic buying toilet roll. Our climate was still changing whilst we were sat waiting for our next Amazon delivery. And the climate is still changing. It always has been and it always will.
But that doesn’t mean we should stop fighting for what needs to happen. That doesn’t mean that we should give up on the change that needs to happen.
Young people, it is our turn now. Speak loud and speak proud about what you believe in. Stand up for yourself, stand up for our planet. We do not all think the same and nor should we. We are not one mind. But we are one planet. And we should be doing whatever it takes to save it from further destruction.
The world doesn’t wait around. Look around you. Clear your vision. Wake up. Open your eyes. Be the change you want to see in this world.
My vision 2021. Happiness. Change.
What will yours be?
